What Are AI Agents and How you Can Have Your Own Today?
Everyone is talking about AI agents, but what are they?
Are they those heartless people in black from the Matrix movie?
They're no😊
AI agents are AI apps that have agency to do things on their own.
So far, we used generative AI through chatbots.
We had text or voice or even video, but we just had conversations with them.
They talked to us.
AI agents can actually do things for us.
AI agents have a level of agency and a level of autonomy.
Agency means that they have access to apps that they can use.
They can connect to my email, they can use a browser and use the apps that I give them access to, all in order to complete tasks for me.
Autonomy means that I give them a mission and they make a plan.
Unlike traditional automation, I don’t tell them what to do step by step.
I give them a mission, and they decide how they're going to approach it.
They make a plan, they execute their plan, if it doesn’t work, they try different ways. And they can even reach out back to me if they need more information or they get stuck on a login, for example.

Step 1: Get there
Go into ChatGPT
Start a new chat
In the model dropdown select GPT-40 with Tasks
Step 2: Give it a mission
For example: every day at 6am, search the web and give me a summary of AI news.
That’s it! It will now run this task every day for you.
It will post the response in the same chat, every time it runs.
Step 3: Improve it
If you don’t like how it works, ask it to change, in the same chat.
For example: let's make this summary 20% geopolitics and 80% app capabilities, tech announcements, etc.
You can change the instruction again and again, until you get it to be exactly how you like it.
Congratulations! You’ve got an AI agent working for you!
What happens next?
You will get a push notification on your phone or an email with a link every time the agent completes the task, which will take you straight into that chat.
You can manage those notification options by clicking your avatar > Settings > Notifications.
Many people use it for daily news.
Some use it for financial news, stock analysis, or professional updates in their field.
Investors use this to know what's going on with the companies they're tracking.
There are so many options.
I have one that asks me every morning about my intentions for the day and one that checks in with me at the end of the day to see how I went with those intentions.
The future of AI agents
AI agents will have more capabilities and become even easier to use.
The agent we created here, can run on a schedule, search the web, summarise and post a response.
Soon, agents will be able to access our email, files, and shopping carts, and they will be able to complete missions and communicate with us in many more ways.
