Deep Research

Do you ever need to study a topic in depth but don’t know all the angles to cover upfront?

AI can help.

A new concept called deep research is now available in AI tools. Unlike regular searches, deep research works as an agent—it searches the web, analyses the information, and autonomously decides what else to explore to provide a comprehensive answer.

Imagine giving an AI a research task. It not only finds relevant articles but also thinks, “What else do I need to know? Should I dig deeper into this aspect? Do I need real-world examples?” The AI then continues researching until it delivers a well-structured, in-depth response.

See it in action in this demo video:

In the video, I mentioned that I would share the link to the chat I just made. Here's the link.

Example: Researching Electric Vehicles in Australia

  • Using Perplexity AI for Comparison – The AI tool helps compare electric vehicle models available in Australia by searching, analysing, and presenting detailed findings.

  • Multi-Source Analysis – The AI scans numerous online sources, reviewing industry reports, manufacturer specifications, customer reviews, and expert analyses.

  • Key Aspects Reviewed – It decides on its own that it needs to compare aspects like pricing, specifications, performance, insurance costs, and charging infrastructure.

  • Comprehensive Comparative Analysis – It then autonomously structures the collected data into an in-depth comparison, offering key insights and personalised recommendations based on user preferences and driving needs.

How Deep Research Works in AI Tools

Deep research is now available across multiple AI platforms. Here’s how you can access it:

  • Perplexity AI – Select deep research mode for an extended and thorough analysis.

  • ChatGPT – Ensure deep research mode is enabled before submitting your query.

  • Google Gemini – Choose the deep research model in the top-left settings.

  • Microsoft Copilot – Look for the ‘Think Deeper’ button.

I showed where to find all these buttons in the video.

All these tools are great at deep research. Use the one you have access to. If you don't have any paid accounts, use Perplexity on the free account.

Each of these tools goes beyond simple responses to deliver well-researched, structured insights that help you make informed decisions.

Why Use Deep Research?

Deep research isn’t just about convenience—it’s about enhancing the quality of information and analysis. This approach is being used across industries for:

  • Scientific and technical research – Analysing studies, theories, and emerging trends

  • Tax and legal research – Reviewing complex legislation changes and case applications

  • Medical research – Exploring medical conditions, treatments, and new technologies

  • Business and market research – Evaluating competitors, trends, and investment opportunities

  • Personal decision-making – Finding the best products, services, or investment options based on comprehensive comparisons

How to Write a Strong Prompt for Deep Research

Because deep research takes time (sometimes over ten minutes) to run, it's important to guide AI in the right direction from the start. One way to do this is by using ChatGPT (or your AI tool of choice) to refine your prompt before running deep research.

Instead of jumping straight in, try this approach:

  • Start a conversation in ChatGPT (without deep research mode enabled).

  • Ask it to help you develop a well-structured prompt for your research topic.

  • Iterate on the prompt by specifying key details—such as specific areas of focus—to ensure it’s tailored to your needs.

  • Include formatting preferences in your prompt if necessary, such as requesting the response in a report format, a structured table, or a concise summary.

This small step can make a big difference in getting precise, relevant, and well-organised results when using deep research mode.

What This Means for You

AI-powered deep research eliminates the time-consuming process of gathering and verifying information manually. It acts as a research assistant that thinks critically, ensuring that important aspects are not overlooked. Instead of spending hours jumping between sources, you get a well-structured, reliable foundation to build upon.

This is the future of research. If you’re not using deep research tools yet, now is the time to start.

Give it a try and see how it can transform the way you work and make decisions.
